Some of the most famous entrepreneurs are introverts. Founder of Tesla, SpaceX, and The Boring Company, Elon Musk is a former “introverted engineer”.

The Introvert’s Guide to Unlocking an Entrepreneurial Mindset explores how introverts can leverage their unique gifts to succeed in business.

In this blog I will reveal some of the best tips for introverts to help understand your strengths and weaknesses to thrive as an entrepreneur.

Understanding Introversion

Introvert (noun): A person who is predominantly concerned with their own thoughts and feelings rather than with external things.

If you enjoy cozy corners and the company of silence over endless chatter and large crowds, you might be an introvert. Introversion is less about being anti-social, and more about energizing your thoughts with silent creativity. Do you find you work best alone where you are able to organize your thoughts? Some of the most common traits amongst introverts are:

Spending Time Alone

Good Listeners

Value Quality Over Quantity

As an introvert, spending time alone doesn’t necessarily mean they’re anti-social, instead they get an energy boost from solitary activities; giving them time to reflect and digress. Sitting quietly simply gives an introvert time to gather their thoughts and come back into social settings feeling recharged and with a sense of purpose. Think of them as a sloth that moonlights as a philosopher, always in need of a nap after too much stimulation.

Introverts are like the gurus of listening; they tune in so well to conversation that you will feel like a cozy, warm and nurtured newborn baby afterward! Empathy is also something that introverts feel when engaged in meaningful conversations, even if you’re talking about the latest ice cream flavor at the corner ice cream shop. Introverts FEEL this story on a deeper, more meaningful level and tend to indulge in every detail you have to offer them about this new ice cream flavor. When given space for feedback, an introvert will give insights that cover all aspects like who, what, where, when, why, and how. They are naturally process level thinkers.

Having an introvert in your circle of friends is like finding the golden ticket to the chocolate factory. You will feel golden just being around them too! This friend will make a significantly meaningful connection with you and ensure that every level of your friendship is prioritized. The more an introvert can spend quality time with a friend, the less they need for more friends.

Entrepreneurial Mindset

Entrepreneurial Mindset: A way of thinking that enables one to overcome challenges, be decisive, and accept responsibility for outcomes. It is characterized by innovation, creativity, risk-taking, and proactivity.

Calling all introverts who think outside the box! The key to keeping an entrepreneurial mindset is to work hard at bringing your ideas to life. To tap into this mindset, embrace what drives innovation, resilience, and proactive behavior. Everyone has setbacks, but you must learn from them to help you grow and harness your creativity to solve problems and improve processes.

Invest in yourself! Finding a mentor is a great way to tap into the unlocked potential of the entrepreneurial mindset. Seek guidance from someone experienced in your niche who can provide valuable tools and advice. Stay active in networking by seeking out people who align with your goals, this can be challenging for the reclusive introvert but will teach you to adapt when necessary. Lastly, set boundaries, protecting your energy is key! Here are some ways to set boundaries that keep you sane, but professional:

1.  Set work hours - Don’t let your business control your life. Stay determined and stick to the schedule like glue! After your workday, unwind and turn your thoughts off by turning your notifications off.

2.  If a task is too overwhelming, say no - strive for what moves your business forward in small steps and outsource the rest.

3.  Give yourself time to get going - like the sloth, ease into your day with a routine that recharges your battery before taking on work tasks.

What is one boundary that you can set? By manifesting and implementing these traits, you can tap into your entrepreneurial mindset and turn your ideas to life!

Challenges Introverts Face in Entrepreneurship

Success starts where your comfort zone ends

You will never do big things by thinking small. Take these obstacles into consideration:

Setbacks = Lessons

Risks = Opportunities

Challenges = Growth

The most successful entrepreneurs don’t waste time focusing on these obstacles, they are relentless on maximizing their vision and success. Even when the odds feel stacked against you, keep learning to get to the next level. Let’s face it, setbacks for an introvert can cause them to withdrawal deeper into their corner and fixate on something less disappointing to get that boost of energy back. Start shifting your mindset when you see yourself starting to hide and watch how quickly everything can change, you may even find a spare battery at this level.

I mentioned networking as a way to tap into your entrepreneurial mindset, for some introverts this may not be the greatest plan. Let’s see how to network in a way that works for introverts:

Focus on events you actually have interest in

Bring a friend or partner and let them break the ice

Leverage online tools like LinkedIn

Focus on asking open ended questions

Networking with strangers can be awkward, so talking about the goals you are passionate about breaks you out of that shell and makes it easier to get your energy levels up. Your extroverted friend is like your built-in battery charger at networking events. Let them lead and act as a buffer whether it be unintentional or not, after all they are the social butterfly. If you’ve found that you had missed connections at a live event, LinkedIn is a good way to re engage with those people by sending a message or commenting on their posts. A great conversation starter in this situation would be “What’s a challenge you’re working on right now?” This leaves the dialogue unrestricted for a more natural flow and steers away from “yes/no” questions, leaving you staring at your foot, feeling awkward.

Introverts have great potential at team leadership. We have the listening skills, we appreciate deep thinking, and we focus on the quality of things, so how can we energize our team leading skills? Here are some skills to consider when taking on a leadership role:

Be patient - Not everyone processes like you or at your pace. Manage this by allowing time to process information, concerns, or feedback. Don’t feel rushed into a response just because it’s right there and now. Just breathe, take it in, and circle back when you are recharged.

Emotions - The emotional intelligence of an introvert is very clear, like an elephant in the room. As a team leader, focus on improving the emotional intelligence overall to communicate clearly as a whole.  Relationships - Invest time into building relationships with your team. This can be a dreadful thought, but it is important to get to know their strengths and motivations.

By honing these skills, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a standout leader. Oh, and don’t forget to bring that extra battery.
